O’Neal Helps Secure State Grants for Landmark Building, Washington Hospital Renovations

HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) today announced the release of $1.5 million in state funds to renovate the Landmark Building and the Washington Hospital obstetrics unit.

O’Neal advocated for support through the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Project (RACP) program to assist with these two important projects.

“Working to address blight has been one of my legislative priorities,” O’Neal said. “This spring I hosted a roundtable discussion on the topic. Helping to update our older buildings, such as the Landmark Building, is one of the keys to success. In addition, as a father of two whose children were born at Washington Hospital, I understand the importance of having a comfortable setting to bring a child into the world. The birth of a child is an important milestone. I’m pleased to have been able to assist with making needed and necessary maternity ward renovations a reality.”

Efforts are underway to renovate the Landmark Building on East Maiden Street in Washington as part of the effort to fight blight in the area. Once completed, the building will house office space. The $500,000 grant will go toward pre-construction design work, demolition and renovation of the building's two floors. Exterior work will include partial roof replacement, chimney and masonry work, ADA-accessible modifications, facade improvements and window replacement. Interior improvements will include improved fire protection, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, electrical and plumbing; decorative lighting; restroom upgrades; and the installation of an updated elevator.

Washington Hospital is the only hospital delivering babies in Washington County and the medically underserved residents in Greene County. The $1 million grant will go toward addition of a new entry/arrival lobby, family waiting area, staff support rooms, and a nursery; enhanced security measures and a locked unit; upgrades to four existing labor and delivery rooms and 13 postpartum patient rooms; an additional labor and delivery room and renovation of the caesarean room.

Funding for the project was authorized by lawmakers in the Capital Budget Project Itemization Act.

The 48th Legislative District in Washington County includes the city of Washington; Chartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and South Strabane townships; and Canonsburg, East Washington and Houston boroughs.
