HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) today announced $64,990 in Safe Schools Targeted Grants were awarded to Washington School District in the 48th Legislative District.

The grant program, funded through the state budget, assists schools with paying for programs to prevent and reduce violent incidents in schools, purchase safety and security-related equipment, and provide for the training and compensation of school resource officers (SRO) and school police officers (SPO).

“While the COVID-19 pandemic has been the focus of late, school security must not be forgotten,” O’Neal said. “Some day soon I hope all students will be back in the classroom every day. We must have proper security measures in place so that children can focus on their education and not worry about their personal safety.”

The school district received a $40,000 Safe Schools School Police Grant and a $24,990 Safe Schools Equipment Grant.

Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grants allow for the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers. Safe Schools Equipment Grants allow school districts to purchase safety and security-related equipment.

The Safe Schools Targeted Grant Program is separate from the School Safety and Security Grant Program created by the Legislature in 2018 and administered by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD).

The 48th Legislative District in Washington County includes the city of Washington; Chartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and South Strabane townships; and Canonsburg, East Washington and Houston boroughs.
