HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) today announced the release of $1.5 million in state funds to Transitional Paths to Independent Living (TRPIL) in order to renovate the former YMCA building in Washington.
TRPIL is in the process of relocating its headquarters and community center to the former YMCA building after it outgrew its current facility. O’Neal advocated for the funding through the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Project (RACP) program to assist with building renovations.
“It’s wonderful to see the YMCA building repurposed for the benefit of many people,” O’Neal said. “TRPIL does yeoman’s work helping those with disabilities live lives they choose and in the places they choose. Services are provided in the areas of advocacy, independent living skills training, information and referral, peer support, and transition. If you know someone who needs assistance, I urge you to contact TRPIL.”
The first phase of construction is expected to be completed this fall. It will include a welcome area, offices, meeting rooms and direct care worker training center. A second phase, which this state money will help fund, will restore the gymnasium and auditorium areas.
Funding for the project was authorized by lawmakers in the Capital Budget Project Itemization Act.
O’Neal thanked the governor for releasing the funding for this vital project.
The 48th Legislative District in Washington County includes the city of Washington; Chartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and South Strabane townships; and Canonsburg, East Washington and Houston boroughs.
