Safe Schools Targeted Grants Awarded, O’Neal Says

October 4, 2018

HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) today announced $70,000 in Safe Schools Targeted Grants was awarded to school districts in the 48th Legislative District.

The grant program, funded through the state budget, assists schools with paying for programs to prevent and reduce violent incidents in schools, purchase safety and security-related equipment, and provide for the training and compensation of school resource officers (SRO) and school police officers (SPO).

“With two young children, I understand the importance of ensuring our schools have the needed funding to make security a high priority,” O’Neal said. “Students should be focused on learning, not their personal safety. I’m pleased to help support our schools’ applications to this program.”

Those receiving grants are:

  • North Strabane Township Police Department, on behalf of the Canon-McMillan School District – Safe Schools School Police Grant – $30,000.
  • Trinity Area School District – Safe Schools School Police Grant – $20,000.
  • Washington School District – Safe Schools Program Grant – $20,000.
Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grants allow for the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers. This grant lasts for a two-year term. Safe Schools Program Grants establish and implement programs to prevent and reduce violent incidents.

The Safe Schools Targeted Grant Program is separate from the new $60 million School Safety and Security Grant Program created by the Legislature this year and administered by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD). The deadline for schools to apply for the new program is Friday, Oct. 12.

The 48th Legislative District in Washington County includes the city of Washington; Chartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and South Strabane townships; and Canonsburg, East Washington and Houston boroughs.
